Think for Yourself. The World Needs More of That.

When was the last time you changed your mind?

Not because someone forced you to.

Not because you were embarrassed.

Because you discovered something new.

I worry that we've started treating curiosity like weakness.

Some people treat changing your mind as something to be ashamed of.

I think it's one of the bravest things a person can do.

The older I get, the less interested I am in being right.

I'm far more interested in getting closer to the truth.

Those aren't always the same thing.

Truth doesn't care about our opinions.

It doesn't care which political party we support.

It doesn't care about our ego.

It simply waits to be discovered.

That requires something many of us have stopped practicing.

Critical thinking.

Critical thinking isn't criticizing everything.

It's asking better questions.

What evidence supports this?

What evidence challenges it?

What might I be missing?

Could the person I disagree with know something I don't?

That's not weakness.

That's wisdom.

Some of the greatest breakthroughs in history happened because someone questioned what everyone else accepted as fact.

Science advances that way.

Medicine advances that way.

Business advances that way.

Humanity advances that way.

Progress begins with curiosity.

I've learned that some of the smartest people I know rarely speak in absolutes.

They ask questions.

They stay humble.

They're willing to say,

"I don't know."

And they aren't afraid to change their minds when better evidence appears.

Imagine if we all did that a little more often.

Imagine if conversations became less about winning...

And more about understanding.

Less about proving someone wrong...

And more about discovering what's right.

We don't have to agree on everything.

In fact, I hope we don't.

Different perspectives challenge us.

Refine us.

Help us see blind spots we never would have noticed on our own.

Unity doesn't require uniformity.

It requires respect.

It requires listening.

It requires the humility to believe that no single person sees the entire picture.

One of my favorite questions is this:

"What would have to be true for the other person to believe what they believe?"

Not because they're always right.

Not because I always am.

But because understanding someone is very different from agreeing with them.

The world doesn't need more shouting.

It needs more thinking.

More listening.

More curiosity.

More people willing to say,

"Teach me something I don't know."

That's how we get closer to truth.

And I believe truth has nothing to fear from honest questions.

So here's my challenge to you.

This week...

Read something written by someone you disagree with.

Have a conversation with someone whose life looks different from yours.

Ask one more question before forming an opinion.

You don't have to change your mind.

But you'll almost certainly expand it.

Because every great discovery begins the same way.

With someone willing to ask...

"What if I'm missing something?"
